Yesterday I worked on my usual annual Vision and Planning Session for the upcoming year, which includes doing a detailed retrospective on the previous year–things I’m proud of, lessons learned, what helped me move forward and what held me back.
And I had one those mega “aha” moments, where I realized why I often make these big, beautiful plans for my business and then don’t follow through on them. I get started, but inevitably seem to lose interest and do something else.
This was all being caused by one thing–one thing I could stop doing in 2017 and immediately become way more effective and successful as a result, not to mention happier and more playful in all my creative endeavors. I felt so strongly about this, and so excited by the possibilities it would create in my life and the lives of others’, that I ran and got my iPad to capture my thoughts on video.
Of course, the sound didn’t work exactly as I had hoped, and the image was grainy, and for whatever reason it stopped recording at some point (after which I said a bunch of useful, witty things that disappeared into who knows where).
“Damn,” I thought. “Now I can’t share this. It’s not good enough.” Then I laughed and realized that was exactly why I HAD to share it. Because that was the whole point of the video.
The one thing we all need to stop doing in 2017 to be successful as our True Selves is to give up Perfectionism, and the key to that is understanding why we pursue it in the first place.
So here’s my imperfect video offering. By posting this as it is, I’m already in the process loop that leads to continuous improvement and eventually to mastery! Whoohoo! :)
My greatest wish for you is that you’ll give up perfectionism, and rise and shine as your beautifully imperfect and ever-evolving True Self in 2017!
