I am a person who has done many life experiments that have made me who I am. These life experiments are always the result of a question I like to play with…

“What if…?”

What if…I committed 1/3 of my time to volunteering, 1/3 to self development and 1/3 to work for an entire year? (I volunteered for seniors homes, a pay-what-you-can-cafe, I planted gardens for youth centres, I helped organize a community conference etc. It was awesome.)

What if…I quit my job as a senior editor at a national business magazine to travel alone through Asia for 7 months and write the book I’ve always wanted to write? (I took the trip, and wrote and published the book, even though many people thought it was crazy.)

What if…I take what I learned as writer/editor and become a teacher? (I taught college for 2 years, then ran 2-day business communications workshops at major companies for 4 years.)

What if…instead of giving money to Foster Parents Plan every month, I actually go and find a school in Asia that needs help and personally raise money and help them directly? (I co-founded a charity with my ex, and we built schools and toilets for poor children in Laos for 5 years. Some of the most amazing experiences of my life.)

What if…I leave behind my conventional career path of journalism, teaching & facilitating and running/organizing events (I also ran an indie music festival) to help other leaders be more effective? Rather than trying to be a leader myself, could I make a bigger impact by uplifting other leaders? What if I leave behind everything I’ve built and become an alternative-style coach, using my natural-born gift for helping people understand and break through the subconscious parts of themselves that hold them back? (I did it. It wasn’t easy, but I’ve been doing it for five years now and knowing that I’ve helped hundreds of leaders be more effective (and happier), and help more people, has been worth all the trouble.)

What if…I commit myself to become great at dancing; make it my highest priority alongside working with clients? (I have been dancing 6-7 days a week for months now. I lost almost 20 pounds, am fitter than I’m ever been, and it continues to make my life richer, especially the friendships I have made in the dance community.)

I could give you many more examples, because my whole life has been built on this approach, but you get the idea. :)

What I want to share with you is the idea to take some time today to play with this question: “What if?” And don’t allow any negative thoughts or beliefs to play the game with you. ;) Because if I had done that, none of these things would have been possible.

What if…you actually decided to go and do something, just for the hell of it? Just to see what happens? Not for any expected result. Just to go on the adventure of it. What amazing things might happen in your life? ;)
