Read the following quote twice, so the truth of it can really sink in. (I’ve read it about 20 times so far, and I’ll likely read it another 20.)

Life is not what you see, but what you’ve projected. It’s not what you’ve felt, but what you’ve decided. It’s not what you’ve experienced, but how you’ve remembered it. It’s not what you’ve forged, but what you’ve allowed. It’s not who’s appeared, but who you’ve summoned. And it’s not where you’ve been, but where you’re going. ~Mike Dooley

Even if you find some part of you does not fully agree with the core idea of this quote (that you are the author of your own life story), indulge me and try this exercise. Put aside all your cynicism and doubt for now. (You can have it all back in just a minute!) You want life to feel more satisfying, right?

 

Action: After reading the following, close your eyes and picture/feel where you’d like your life to go next. Don’t censor it with “reality”. Let your imagination run free.

What do you want to feel?
What would you like to be doing?
Where would you like to be?
What kind of people would you like around you?
What kind of person would you like to be?

Imagining what you most want to experience is the second practical step in creating the next (much more satisfying) chapter of your life. (The first step is getting clear on what you don’t want—which I’ll bet you’re an expert at by now!) More steps to come in future blog posts…

Now grab the nearest pen and write down what you imagined on a napkin or whatever’s nearby. Just do it now, before you talk yourself out of it (see, I know what you’re thinking). :)
